On the consumer side, Tello is a free web and mobile service that aggregates ratings for businesses (business listings are aggregated from Localeze) from across the web and allows users to post comments about their experience at a business. Users can provide feedback on specific employees, recommend an employees and share a positive or negative story about the employee. Via iPhone and Android apps, users can select a specific business, choose and employee at the business and rate the service with a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

With Tello?s mobile apps, people can even specify employee names and provide specific feedback on an individual.

Today, Tello is also launching Tello for Business, a new service that helps businesses of any size improve by enabling instant feedback via customers? mobile devices. Tello for Business allows businesses to be immediately notified of feedback and can respond instantly to acknowledge praise or resolve issues in real-time. The basic version of Tello for Business is free to businesses with up to 3 locations, while the premium version is $99 per location per month, and adds the ability for businesses to respond both publicly and privately to the ratings.

KUCHING: The Early Childhood Education Development Council (MPAKS) will introduce a Preschool Quality Standard (PQS) next month.

Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said the PQS would cover five aspects ? physical, learning programme, welfare, personnel and management.

?The standard will benefit 3,031 government and private preschools registered with the state Education Department and is expected to be introduced on March 27,? she said during the closing of ?Malam Permata? on Friday night.

Registration centres will
also be opened at strategic locations across the state by the end of next month to encourage all private kindergartens to register.

The centres, Fatimah explained, would speed up the registration process for private kindergartens, which is around three to 11 months ? if renovations are required for the premises.

She also announced a collaboration between Open University Malaysia (OUM)
and Mara to introduce an Executive Diploma in Early Childhood Management and Education.

?The course fees will be paid by Mara to those who are qualified where the 10-month course will include lectures, industry exposure and business plan,? she added.

Those who complete the course will have the opportunity to run a preschool or kindergarten with Mara financial support.

Meanwhile, 72 preschool teachers took part in the month-long ?Pendidik Permata Negara? course.

MPAKS organised the course in collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), the Prime Minister?s Department?s Permata, Yayasan Sarawak and the Sarawak Islamic Council Education Bureau.

Researchers at the universities of Granada and Ja?n, Spain, have discovered why recalling some items from memory reduces our ability to recall other related items. In the field of Psychology, this phenomenon is known as "Retrieval-Induced Forgetting" (RIF), and researchers have determined the cognitive process that causes this phenomenon and its duration.

To carry out this study, the researchers designed a set of memory tasks where the participants had to learn a material and then recall it partially. Memory tasks had different levels of difficulty and included different types of materials; they were presented both to young people (university students) and to elder people (average age: 65 years).

Firstly, participants were asked to learn a list of words grouped by semantic category. Then, participants were presented a set of cues to make them name half the words from half the categories. Then, they were asked to recall all the elements learnt in the first phase. The researchers found that participants had difficulty to remember the elements that had not been practiced in the second phase and were from the same category that had half its items practiced. However, it was easier for them to remember those elements that had not been recalled in the second phase and belonged to categories that had not been practiced.

Two Questions to be Solved

The aim of this research study was to characterize the cognitive control mechanism involved in Retrieval-Induced Forgetting. While some of the properties of this phenomenon are known, there are two relevant questions unanswered: controlled nature versus automated nature of the mechanism responsible for reducing the ability to recall items, and the duration of such reduced ability.

These two questions have been answered by the University of Granada researchers, who have confirmed the adaptive nature of Retrieval-Induced Forgetting. This phenomenon is an effect of the activation of a cognitive control mechanism that is efficient even in individuals with a partial executive control deficiency. This mechanism reduces access to memory traces that might affect the recalling of target information, and its persistence relies on the type of information involved.This phenomenon is not permanent, as forgotten information can be recalled shortly when it occupies a central part of the cognitive structure of the subject.

The principal author of this study is Almudena Ortega, from the University of Granada Department of Experimental Psychology, in collaboration with professors Teresa Bajo Molina, from the University of Granada, and Carlos J. G?mez Ariza, from the University of Ja?n, Spain.

The results of this research study have been partially published in Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, memory and Cognition.

On Saturday and again Sunday, Venus, Jupiter and Earth's moon converge for a brilliant night show.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- In the early 1900s, a Winston-Salem telephone operator named Annie Grogan started giving part of her paycheck to needy families in the community.

Co-workers and other individuals started pitching in and, in 1905, they formed the Association of Charities, which soon was joined by local churches.

Now known as Family Services, a private nonprofit, the agency serves about 5,000 families a year.

Operating with an annual budget of $8 million and roughly 150 employees, the agency provides services in the areas of safe relationships, family solutions, and child development.

And with the battered economy continuing to take its toll on families, Family Services is seeing growing demand for services, as well as a shift in the types of families looking for assistance.

"More families are struggling with underemployment, unemployment or lack of benefits," says Al Renna, who has been the agency's president and CEO since 1995.

"So we're seeing more of the middle-class, working family needing counseling," he says, "because they're affected by the economic pressures while not necessarily having the insurance benefits that would support counseling for family and children's issues."

In the agency's largest division, which focuses on child development, a Head Start program serves nearly 500 children ages three and four, while other privately-funded programs also serve young children.

The group's safe-relationships division includes a battered-women's shelter, owned by the Winston-Salem Foundation, that houses up to 34 women and children.

And the agency recently landed a $180,000 federal grant that will pay for subsidized rents in community apartments for up to 10 women at any given time, a new "transitional-housing" program that will give women time to "build up assets so they could take over more and more of their housing costs," Renna says.

The safe-relationships division also provides services in the areas of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The agency's family-services division provides family and individual counseling; helps people buy used cars so they can get to work and get their kids to child care; works with volunteers who phone frail elderly people every day to make sure they are okay; and assists with domestic adoptions, including "home studies" for families throughout the state wanting to adopt children from abroad.

In the last decade, the agency has made over $1 million worth of auto loans and, in the fiscal year that ends June 30, 2012, is on track to make auto loans worth nearly $250,000, Renna says.

"Our goal is not only to get their car but to help them build credit so they can get future loans for other things," he says.

Family Services generates $5 million, or 63 percent of its overall budget, through federal funding for its child-development programs, mainly for Head Start.

The agency also generates $900,000 in state and county funds, just over $500,000 in counseling fees, roughly $1.2 million from United Way of Forsyth County and other local United Way affiliates, and roughly $250,000 through fundraising, mainly from individuals.

But with funders increasingly targeting and restricting the use of their support for specific programs, Renna says, Family Services lacks the flexibility to shift dollars to "wrap" services around emerging community needs.

The economic downturn has made it tough for working families with jobs that are low-paying but not low enough to qualify for subsidized day-care programs like Head Start, he says.

To better cope with the tough economic times, including ongoing changes in government funding and the impact of the economy on private funders, Family Services is reviewing its business model and looking for ways to bundle and market its services to corporations, medical providers and families in return for fees.

The types of fee-based services it is considering include employee assistance programs for small companies, training on workplace violence for corporations, and conflict-resolution training, child care, and specialized parenting training for individuals.

"Like many nonprofits, we're in that difficult transition of trying to remain stable in an unstable world," Renna says.

"The funding environment continues to be confusing and unpredictable," he says. "So we're trying to read it correctly, support the vital services we're delivering, and at the same time prepare ourselves for a greater change that will lead us into new ventures that will ultimately make us more sustainable."

Lawrence Walrond is a well respected (now retired) teacher and photographer who has resided in Nanaimo since September 1970. He has travelled throughout Canada, USA, Great Britain, France, Monaco, Spain, Central and South America and the Caribbean. In all these places he is inspired by the many landscapes, in his words, ?of this wonderful place we inhabit.?

This photographic collection was mainly taken in the central Vancouver Island area, but there are also stunning views of Waterton Lakes in Alberta , Haida Gwai, and Mayne Island. He revisits many of these areas in different times of the year to observe changes in season and light according to time of day.

The photographs are printed on archival canvas with high quality archival ink which makes them look painterly. The amazing colours in his works are not artificially enhanced. This ability to capture breathtaking scenes comes from a fifty year love affair with photography and a lot of experimenting and practice. It also comes from a practiced and artistic eye.

UK's top court to hear case of hacking private eye (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's Supreme Court says it will hear the case of a private investigator who is fighting to keep secret who told him to hack phones on behalf of the News of the World tabloid.

Glenn Mulcaire was jailed briefly in 2007 for eavesdropping on the phones of royal aides, and police have found the names of hundreds of other potential victims in his notes.

Comedian Steve Coogan is suing Mulcaire and Rupert Murdoch's newspaper company, and wants Mulcaire to reveal who asked him to intercept voicemail messages.

Mulcaire wants to use the traditional privilege against self-incrimination to avoid doing so, but earlier this month the Court of Appeal ordered him to disclose the names.

The Supreme Court said Wednesday it would hear Mulcaire's case on May 9 and 10.
