On the Verge of Becoming Socially Anxious

Health, Anxiety, Zoloft, Side Effects

Feeling uneasy being around people has been given several names: shyness, agoraphobia and now social anxiety. The feeling of being watched and judged becomes a habit and a curse. Without notice, doing routine activities might?become too difficult that one would rather spend the day alone to avoid embarrassing situations. A good number of these individuals might?slip into depression for?being unable to do what they want to do because of the restraining effect of the disorder. Antidepressants are used to help them get through this rough patch. Scientific?studies have shown that?antidepressants affect the head size of babies?upon birth.

Even though shyness is common with any person, especially when confronted with new companies?and new situations, people with social anxiety experience shyness in a different level. In fact, the definition of social anxiety has raised questions from experts and amateurs alike because it can be mistaken as shyness or with other types of anxiety. But, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, social phobia stems from fear of being judged that it could make a person avert from any social activities. Social situations that would be a normal activity for other people may be a mountainous task for a person with social phobia. That is why they tend to avoid getting themselves?to crowded places like banks, supermarkets, church or other places even if they needed to. They would need professional help to get back on track with their lives.

Usually, this problems starts at an early age and may last for several months to years if not treated. Psychiatrists try to diagnose this problem by looking at the symptoms of the patient. These symptoms should have?been felt for six or more months in duration to fully qualify as a social anxiety disorder. Antidepressants are one of the treatments used for social phobia and it helps by lessening the physical symptoms felt by the patients. Psychiatrists also prescribe antidepressants because most of these men and women also develop depression on top of their social phobia. It may help, in most cases, but other people have felt no relief from taking antidepressants. There are even some who file?Zoloft lawsuit?against a drug?manufacturer because of severe side effects of the antidepressant.
