In the May 2012 issue of The Employment Journey, freelance writer Louise Campbell provided some?tips on resum? writing?. It was part of a workshop she led at the Confederation Centre Library on how to market yourself when looking for work. ??Cover letters are an important step,? says Louise. ?Be clear about why they should hire you. Make sure you include all your qualities and let your organizational skills shine through.? Be careful not to repeat details from the resum?.?

• Show a strong willingness to learn about the company and to learn new skills.
• Customize the cover letter for each position you apply for.

Organizing the cover letter

• The first paragraph is your introduction and should have a dynamic attention grabber such as where you first heard of the job or employer.
• In the second and third paragraph, explain what you know about the company or the job and how you would fit in.

• In the fourth and closing paragraph, refer the reader to your resum?, ask for an interview and indicate you will follow up with the employer soon.

Business cards?Business cards are a great and convenient way to market yourself,? says Louise. ?They are small and easy to fit in your wallet. If you happen to run into someone who could be hiring, or who knows someone who is hiring, you can just give them your card. ?

• The information on your business card should include your name, job interest, and contact information.
• Personalize your business card with a nice design on the side or a different font style that does not distract the reader from the information on the card.? It?s a nice touch which gives a prospective employer an idea of what you?re like.
